French
Intent
Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. We would like our linguists to develop a love and appreciation for the French language through enjoyable and stimulating lessons. We strive to encourage children’s curiosity about language and embed the skills necessary to enable them to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning. We aim to enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We also seek to provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, opening the door for new experiences later in life.
Implementation
At Brunel Field Primary, with our focus on French, we enable pupils to make substantial progress in one language. Regular lessons in speaking, listening, reading and writing are delivered from Year 3 – 6 and we ensure that children build on language knowledge and skills learned in previous years as they progress through KS2. The teaching of French enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters that are real and relevant for the children. Through using a variety of memorable activities including cooking, drama, art and performing rhymes, songs and poems, the children consolidate their learning and become more curious and enthusiastic about their growing ability to communicate in French. The French curriculum at Brunel Field works with our Core Learning Skills approach which places an emphasis on the skills of understanding ourselves and others and expressing and articulating ourselves clearly.
