PE
Intent
Our aim is to provide opportunities for pupils to enjoy sport and physical activity, not only in school, but as a part of everyday life. At Brunel Field we aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being. PE lessons also aim to build self-esteem, confidence and resilience, to promote team work and cooperation amongst pupils and to reinforce our core values of commitment, joy, respect and compassion.
Implementation
At Brunel Field, we offer pupils the opportunity to compete in sports and other activities, in order to help build character and reinforce our core values. We use ‘Real PE’ to teach the progression of core movement skills – including agility, balance and co-ordination - that are necessary for all sport. These skills are delivered through six ‘cogs’ which each have a different emphasis e.g. physical, social, personal, creative, physical, health and fitness. Throughout Key Stage 2, children apply these core movement skills in a variety of sports including rounders, cricket, dance, gymnastics, netball, basketball, hockey, football, rugby and athletics. In Year 4, children also attend swimming lessons at the local swimming pool. Together with our whole school Core Learning Skills approach, this curriculum at Brunel Field places great emphasis on the skills required to develop the knowledge and understanding related to the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators and thus embedding life-long values such as co-operation, collaboration and equity of play. The close proximity and good relationships between Brunel Field and the Gloucestershire County Cricket ground and club enable us to use their facilities and expertise to enhance our PE provision which helps inspire the children and provides a fantastic venue for our school sports days! Our PE Curriculum, along with PSHE and science, teaches children about the importance of healthy living and learning about the need for good nutrition.
