Birthday Celebration Guide for Parents
Purpose
To celebrate children’s birthdays in a way that is joyful, inclusive, healthy, and manageable for all families.
Participation is Optional
There is no expectation for families to bring in treats. Children will be celebrated in class regardless of whether they bring something to share.
If You Choose to Bring Treats
Please consider the following to ensure inclusivity and safety:
Be Inclusive
- Choose vegetarian, halal, and gelatine-free options where possible.
- Avoid nuts and check labels for common allergens.
Keep It Modest
- A small sweet or chocolate is enough — no need for large bags, whole cakes or elaborate packaging.
- Avoid bringing in multiple items or “party bags.”
Be Environmentally Aware
- Avoid plastic toys or non-recyclable packaging.
- If considering non-food items, opt for eco-friendly and low-cost options.
Alternative Celebration Ideas
If you prefer not to bring sweets, here are some fun and meaningful ways to celebrate:
- Bring a favorite book to be read in class.
- Ask the class to sing Happy Birthday.
- Wear a birthday badge.
- Share a game or story with the class.
Communication Tips
Let your child’s teacher know in advance if you plan to bring something.
If your child has dietary restrictions, some parents choose to leave a small stash of safe treats with the teacher for special occasions.
Let’s Work Together
This tradition is meant to bring joy — not stress. By being thoughtful and flexible, we can ensure all children feel included and celebrated.
